what an unexpected suprise

The sound of rushed footsteps echoed throughout the fifth division barracks as it’s captain made his way back to his office. Sebastian had completely lost track of time and had figured he spent way to much time walking around the seireitei, thought he knew he could trust his officers and members of his squad to not do anything stupid, this was not the reason why he was rushing. While Sebastian had been out on his stroll he had received a hell butterfly that had a messages stating that he was assigned a vice captain, at first Sebastian breathed a sigh of relief just for the simple fact that he now didn’t have to pick someone to fill the spot but at the same time he realized that he didn’t want to make a bad first impression on whoever it was.

Sebastian reached the door of his office and paused for a moment, he took this time to collect himself, take a few breaths, and finally opened the door. The captain stared into his office and what he saw, he was not expecting. He stared blankly at his new vice captain and blinked a few times as if to see if the person before him was in fact really there. “sorry to keep you waiting.” he said politely with a smile.

The person standing in front of him was a 4.8 tall girl with pale skin, violet eyes and waist long black hair. Her hair was pulled into a low ponytail, her bangs having been let loose in order to frame her face. A Kuchiki headpiece was tied around her left section of bangs. In body and face, she appeared to be 16 years old. She was wearing a standard uniform, with her red hilted zanpaktou located at her right in, in a holster. A white scarf was worn around her neck, the ends reaching down to her knees. The scarf was the one that the kuchiki house leader wore, it was worth enough to buy 10 mansions. She wasen`t the leader, so the fact that she was wearing it, could only mean that she was Kuchiki Rukia, the younger adoptive sister of Byakuya. Since the disappearance of many high ranked shinigami, Rukia had held a low profile and focused on helping the search parties. The fact that she had become his vice captain, meant it was the decision of the captain commander.

"There`s no need to sorry Sebastian taicho, it was me who agreed with the first division to meet so sudden..", she spoke in a respectful tone, and made a light bow towards him. Rukia laid her head back and looked up at him, with him being around 6 feet tall her small size became even more clear. It wasen`t uncommon for most shinigami females to be lower than the males. "I`m Kuchiki Rukia, its an honor to be your vice captain..". She smiled a little up to him, showing that she wasen`t like Byakuya when it came to showing emotions, on the most part at least. Rukia`s name had become known through all of seireitei ever since her "execution", which had happened around 2 years ago. After the winter war, the Kuchiki clan had fully accepted her, which was why she was wearing a hair ornament from the family. Rukia spend the next couple of moments studying his face. He had the same calm aura around him like Aizen had, had during his time as a captain.

Sebastian stood in the doorway to his office still a little awestruck, to many it may have not seemed like such a big deal but the fact that Sebastian’s vice captain was Rukia Kuchiki meant a lot to him. After Rukia’s introduction and slight bow, Sebastian returned he greeting with a slight bow to start. After Sebastian stood straight again he took notice in the obvious height difference between himself and the young female shinigami.

Sebastian smiled “It’s quite an hour to have you as my vice captain, Kuchiki Rukia.” Sebastian took the time to quickly glance over his newly appointed vice captain, taking in the immediate obvious details first and then taking note of the subtle more minute details such as the scarf around her neck, which if Sebastian recalled correctly belonged to Kuchiki Byakuya, the head of the Kuchiki house. A small hint of sympathy showed on Sebastian’s face as he looked at the scarf, the fact that Rukia now wore it meant that Byakuya was among the many shinigami that had disappeared. Sebastian’s eyes scanned quickly as the last detail he took note of was the Kuchiki hairpiece “it appears that the Kuchiki clan has grown rather fond of you.” he said as he motioned for his vice captain to take a seat in a chair that was positioned in front of his desk.

Though the captain of the fifth division was nearly nine hundred years old he only appeared to be in his early twenties. Sebastian’s attire was the standard shinigami attire but, his captain’s haori was tailored differently as it had narrow sleeves and a collar to match nearly resemble a duster or coat. Sebastian rounded his desk till he was at his chair and took a seat.

Rukia let her fingers trace over the hairpiece, a sudden calmness coming over her face. "Not really...it is only because Byakuya Nii-sama told them to, and because my shikai has grown stronger..". The short girl took seat at the chair he had pointed at, folding her hands in her lap firmly. Based on the way she was sitting, you could see that she had been raised among the Kuchiki`s. It was no secret that her and Byakuya had grown closer in the aftermath of the war, and since he had dissapeared, it was clear that Rukia wore the scarf in memory of him. It was maybe also the reason that she had grown her hair so long. Rukia removed her hand from the hair ornament, and let it slide over the vice captain armband, that was tied around her left forearm. So this is how it feels to be wearing a vice captain badge...no wonder Kaien-dono protected it so much... Rukia looked at Sebastian again, finding herself thinking it was Ukitake for a moment. She did miss the white haired captain, they had grown a father/daughter relationship over the years, and he was the only one, whom had gone through just as much pain for loosing Kaien as she had.

She laid her violent eyes onto the desk, knowing she would be sitting at one once the decoration of her own office was completed. She would be given Hinamori`s old office. Rukia haden`t really gotten to know her, but they had talked together in the past during their academy days, since Hinamori was a good friend of Renji. I wonder how he is doing..after all he has lost his position in the sixth division..

Sebastian stared at his vice captain with a look of sympathy as she spoke about her brother. Sebastian knew the feeling all to well, he often regretted having to kill his brother Robert and mostly tried to forget that Robert ever betrayed him in the first place but, the pain of losing his brother was still there.

When Rukia looked up at him Sebastian saw the look on her face and smiled “don’t worry, you’ll fit in great here in the fifth division. Hell if you want you can go and visit Ukitake-taicho when ever you want.” with that said he gave her feint smile and then decided ask an odd question “so tell me Rukia. What do you like doing for fun?”

Sebastian had asked that question to everyone of his officers ever since he took over as captain, this threw many off because most captain’s cared little about what their officers liked or disliked but, Sebastian was different and had experience with commanding his own troops once before, he had a secret to getting the most growth and cooperation from his soldiers or officers in this case, which was to give them a bit of freedom and a chance to just not worry about having to impress their captain. As a matter of fact even though Sebastian pushed his officers to the limits everyday, he was still kind and caring towards each and everyone of his subordinates.

Rukia`s eyes widen a little of surprise over his words, apparently she wasen`t used to be asked such things. "What i like..doing?". She took in a deep breath and folded her hands in her lap, relaxing herself. "..I enjoy training my skills, doing my job as a shinigami, watch the sakura trees bloom, and i rarely refuse tea..". Her voice had a forced soft tone to it, apparently she was having a hard time talking calmly to him. A wind blew in from one of the nearby windows, playing with the white scarf and her long black hair. The fact that she had grown her hair and wore the scarf, made her resemble Byakuya in some way. Even through she was adopted, she did have some personality traits in common with him, such as his weird sence of "art".

"...I`m sad to inform you of this, Sebastian taicho, but Ukitake is one of the people that has yet to be found...".

Sebastian arched a brow at Rukia’s words, indeed these were troubling times and the fact that so many high ranking shinigami had gone missing made Sebastian only want to find out why they disappeared even more.
“I see. I’m sorry to here that.” his tone was a bit more serious now, almost as if Rukia’s words had put him into deep thought.

The room fell silent for a moment as Sebastian thought. “these are troubling times but, we can not let them keeps us down.” Sebastian then rose from his seat and held out his hand to Rukia “come, we shall go meet the rest of the squad. I’m sure they’ll be happy to meet their new vice captain.” Sebastian said this with a smile as he awaited Rukia’s response.

Rukia`s violet eyes followed his every moment as he rose from the chair, walking over to her, holding a hand out towards her. She lowered her head a bit, fondling with the fabric of her obi for a moment. She seemed to be uneasy about being so close. "H, hai!". She stood up from the chair, turning her back to him the moment she got to a standing position. With less than 3 feet between them, her small size of 4.8 became clear. She haden`t even passed the age of 70 yet, but since her body had matured, and most shinigami was beyond 5.0 in her age, it seemed unlikely she would ever grow taller. As she stood up, her black hair and ankle long white scarf whirled around her for a moment, falling gently down her back. With her long black hair, and the scarf, she did resemble Byakuya minorly from behind, even through they weren`t blood related.

"The- then shall be go, Sebastian taicho?". She didn`t even turn around to look at him, her voice shuttering a little bit. She weren`t afriad of him, neither did she hate him, she was just taken back on how friendly he was towards her.

Sebastian watched the movements of his vice captain closely, as she got up and turned her back to him, he smiled in acceptance of his vice captain’s actions and withdrew his hand back to his side. It was going to take some getting used to but, Sebastian knew eventually Rukia would open up and be a bit more relaxed around the captain. As Sebastian followed Rukia out of his office and into the fresh air he finally realized the height difference between himself and the young girl, and the uncanny resemblance to her adoptive brother was interesting to say the least.

Sebastian eventually picked up his pace and got along side Rukia and smiled as he looked at her “this way Rukia, most of the officers should be at the training grounds.” with that Sebastian stepped in front of his vice captain and led her to the area that Sebastian had designated for training, and as he thought, his squad was hard at work. “Alright everybody gather around.” he yelled out. Almost immediately the officers and unseated shinigami in the area rushed to form organized rows and stood before their captain.

Sebastian smiled at the obedience of his squad, he wasn’t hard on them but he commanded the respect of every individual in the barracks and none of them were willing to get on Sebastian’s bad side, if he had one. “Ok everybody, this here is your new vice captain. I’m sure many of you have met or heard of miss Kuchiki before but, now is your chance to formerly introduce yourselves.” with than Sebastian took and bow and then backed away from Rukia as the squad began to walk up individually and greet their newly appointed vice captain, many seemed nervous to be in her presence, news of her adventures with Ichigo had spread throughout Soul Society like wildfire and to these shinigami Rukia was like a legend.

Rukia folded her hands in front of herself as the members of the division looked at her, their eyes showing surprise and respect. "Ano...", she slowy started, looking down at the ground. "I`m Kuchki Rukia, i will be your new vice captain, its a pleasure to meet you all!". Her voice was loud and clear, so that everyone in the whispering crowd could hear it. As the squad members began to introduce themselfs briefly, some telling how honored they were by shaking hands with her, Rukia responded in brief answers, such as "hi", "im glad to meet you also", and "thankes for the nice words". Halfway through the greetings, she even forced a small smile over her face. She reconized a couple of names and faces, shinigami had been on patrol with when she had been in the 13th division under Ukitake`s leadership. When the last few members was introducing themselfs, a sudden wind blew accros them, catching Rukia`s white scarf and hair again. The division member`s looked at the scarf, reconizing it to be Byakuya`s.

"Ano..Kuchiki-sama, isen`t that-", one of them began, only to be cut off by Rukia. "Yes it is Kuchiki taicho`s scarf, i was given it since im the closest family". Rukia held a hand onto the scarf, preventing it from falling off her, letting the long ends of it blow around her. Her quick respond to a rather direct question, silenced the squad. Rukia looked at Sebastian for a moment, before lowering her gaze once again to the ground.

"Kuchiki-san..is it true you wield the most beautiful zanpaktou in soul soceity?", one of the younger shinigami asked, as if he could read Rukia`s mind on wanting to change topic. Rukia`s face soften up a bit, and she made a light nod towards him. "Sode no Shirayuki is her name..she`s been with me for a long time". She slided her free hand onto the hilt of her zanpaktou, making it clear that the two were close.

Sebastian could help but feel a smile creep onto his face, the lit up faces of the shinigami was priceless and for a brief moment Sebastian was glad that the addition of Rukia to the squad made a difference. *perhaps now, they will be more inclined to put forth their best effort.* he thought, his attention then suddenly shifted to the crowd as a quick gust of wind blew through the area, Sebastian watched a few helpless leaves offer themselves up to the might force of wind and let out a small sigh. A faint glimmer of white caught the corner of his eyes and as he looked to see what it was, locked eyes with Rukia. Sebastian could sympathize with his young captain, he to had suffered the ill fate of losing a sibling that was close to him, he fought that emotion every day.

As Rukia looked at him, Sebastian gave a slight smile as if trying to convey a message saying *everything will be alright.* the captain used this small meeting with the officers to take a breather but, as he realized the last of the shinigami had spoken, he rose from where he was sitting and made his way over to Rukia, he raised a hand to put it on her shoulder but stopped himself from doing so, instead he walked in front of his vice captain and looked at her “well it’s your choice now, what would you like to do?” Sebastian had only met Rukia this once and he was already trying his best to make her comfortable, he figured that since today was her fist day, he would take things slow, after all the poor girl was going through a lot.

Rukia took a step slightly to the left as she saw his hand reaching for his shoulder. She followed him with her eyes as he stopped his hand, walking up in front of her insteed. A few of the squsd members stuck their heads togeder, discussing that their new vice captain was unusual short. Rukia listend to the bits of whispering that could be heard, and chose to let it pass, they were allowed to think about her what they wanted, she was after all the one who had invaded their division, and taken the spot of Hinamori Momo, whom still was dissapeared. The wind eventually settled down, the ends of the scarf falling back into place on her back. Rukia ajusted the Kuchki hair ornament, making sure it haden`t gotten loose in the sudden wind. Looking up at Sebastian again, he asked what she wanted to do now. "I don`t really kno-".

"Why don`t you have a spar?", one of the seated officers suggested, serval division members following up with their agreements on it. "A spar?", the young Kuchiki repeated rather surprised, looking up at the captain again. "Yea, its a good way to break the ice, don`t you agree, taicho?".

Sebastian looked at his vice captain with a look of confidence, the choice was truly hers to make, it would be a fun idea but Sebastian never did hold back and that was one of the few reasons why many of his seated officers had to pay a visit to the fourth division. While Rukia though of an answer, Sebastian shot a glance to the officers that where throwing out the ideas, the fell silent for a moment and Sebastian thought about how there was a slight possibility that he could get Rukia to open up a bit, if the sparred against each other.

Rubbing the back of his head Sebastian let out a small chuckle, “the choice is yours, vice captain Kuchiki” with that he gave a polite bow and awaited Rukia’s response. In the mean time Sebastian also thought about how he would go through with this, if Rukia chose to spar against him. Sebastian actually began to like the idea, it would become a challenge considering he had never witnessed his vice captain in battle, there was always a chance to learn something new.

Insteed of answeing, she walked off the wodden pathway that ran around the division barrack. The squad members stepped aside as she passed them, each of them having diffrent ideas of what she was going to do. To most`s surprise, she stopped after walking around 30 feet, and turned to face Sebastian again. "If its what the division members think, i think we should entertain them, taicho". She withdrew her zanpaktou from her hip holster, using a few moments on getting used to holding it again. It had been a few weeks since she last had been in a serious battle, so this spar would help her maintain her zanpaktou wielding skills. Taking a stance, with both of her hands gribbing the sword`s hilt firmly, she looked at the shinigami. "Please clear the area a little, the last we want is one of you getting caught in the battle".

Maintaining her stance, she turned her attention back at Sebastian. "Taicho, are you ready?".

Sebastian raised an eyebrow at his vice captain’s enthusiasm. Letting out a sigh, Sebastian reach up and lightly gripped the handle of his sword and drew it from it’s sheath. “I’m ready when you are.” he said as he took his stance, which wasn’t really a stance at all, he stood straight up with his sword resting at his side. To many this would look like he wasn’t ready, but in fact this was his favorite stance because it allowed him to counter or move a lot better than if he had a specific stance.

The wind had settled down and many eager shinigami awaited the beginning of a spar between their captain and their vice captain, for some of the new arrivals, this would be the first time that they had ever seen the weapon that belonged to their captain. The fact that Sebastian’s sword when sealed was a broadsword instead of a katana many oos and ahs, could be heard coming from the surrounding group. Sebastian patiently waited Rukia to make the first move.
